Friendship

Loyalty, play, shared work, absence, chosen kinship. Friendship has its own architecture. It is not romance with the lights lowered.

  Walt Whitman meets Peter Doyle, a horsecar conductor, on a stormy night. The letters that follow are companionship: working-class, queer, daily, and not a secret the poems had failed to tell.

• Ireland and Wales, late Georgian

  Plas Newydd

  Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby left Ireland in 1778 and kept a household in Wales for fifty years. They used the language of friendship. Do not force a modern label as the only truth. Do not deny the intimacy.

  A Hedge Away

  Emily Dickinson and Susan Huntington Gilbert lived a hedge apart. The letters and poems are intimate, queer-readable, and tangled in family. A modern book-title is not the name she gave her life.

  To Her Vicereine, and to Learning

  Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz wrote love sonnets, some toward the Countess of Paredes, and the letter Respuesta a Sor Filotea. Friendship, desire, convent, colonial gender. Not a sticker. Not a denial.

  Myongwol

  Hwang Jini, the gisaeng-poet called Bright Moon, wrote sijo with independence, wit, and desire. She was not waiting to be saved, and she is not a tragic courtesan cliché.

• Tibet, Sixth Dalai Lama

  The Songs Below the Palace

  Tsangyang Gyatso, the Sixth Dalai Lama, wrote songs of lovers and willow groves while holding a religious office. The tension is real. The later death is political and grim. It is not a lyric.
