A doorway, not a diagnosis

• Waiting

  Love has always known how to occupy the hours in which the other does not arrive.

• Distance

  Miles do not merely separate. They change what a voice can carry, and what a hand can mean.

• Desire

  The body leaning toward what it has not been promised.

• Devotion

  A vow that remains after feeling has been spent, and sometimes before it has been felt.

• Fidelity

  Not the same as remaining. The question of what, exactly, is being kept.

• Marriage

  The long experiment of making a life in the presence of another person.

• Friendship

  Loyalty, play, shared work, absence, chosen kinship. Friendship has its own architecture. It is not romance with the lights lowered.

• Forbidden

  When the world has already decided who may be touched.

• Unanswered

  A letter that does not come back still changes the one who sent it.

• Reunion

  The risk of seeing, again, the face that memory has been editing.

• Separation

  Not the end of love. The climate in which some of its oldest poems were grown.

• Grief

  What love becomes when it can no longer be answered in the present tense.

• Death

  The last form of distance. Some kept writing anyway.

• Longing

  The stretching of the self toward an absence that has a name.

• Home

  The place love tries to make, and the place it is exiled from.

• Jealousy

  Attention turned sharp: the fear that the beloved is finite, and already spent elsewhere.

• Forgiveness

  The unglamorous labor of remaining in relation after harm.

• Ordinary

  Breakfast, a cold, the price of cloth. The history of love is mostly this.

• Endurance

  Not triumph. The decision, renewed, not to unchoose someone.

• First love

  Before one has learned what the words will cost.

• Last letters

  The page written as if there will not be another. Sometimes there was not.

• Freedom

  Love’s oldest argument with belonging: whether a person can be both given and unpossessed.

• Letters never sent

  The sentence that stayed in the drawer, still addressed.
