Questions
Love keeps reopening these
We do not close a question merely because an article needs an ending.
What makes love endure?
Not the proof that it can. The older question: what, in a given life, was the thing that did not stop.
What does distance do?
Some loves are born of distance. Some are deformed by it. A few become writing, which is another kind of crossing.
Can love survive without possession?
The archive is not trying to make the answer yes. It is trying to watch what people did when they could not keep the person they wanted.
What do we owe the people we love?
Duty is not the enemy of love. It is one of love’s disguises, and sometimes its honorable name.
Can love remain after the beloved is gone?
Grief is one answer. Poetry is another. Neither is a resurrection, and both have been mistaken for one.
What does grief reveal?
Not only that we loved. Sometimes, the shape of the love, its rank, its unfinished sentence, the room it had already built.
What can a letter say that a face cannot?
Ink has time. A face has weather. Some people could only tell the truth in the interval between sending and being read.
How much of love is attention?
To notice is already a vow of a kind. The poems know this; the letters know it better.
What is an unanswered love still doing?
It is not necessarily waiting. It may be making a language, a life, a refusal, a god.
What does freedom require of lovers?
Not always departure. Sometimes the harder thing: to stay without owning, or to leave without erasing.
What makes someone beloved?
The archive will not give you a trait list. It will give you addresses, my sister, my lord, Sue, Fanny, the one who sat across from me and spoke.
When is waiting a form of refusal?
Some waiting is a politics. Some is a wound that has learned to look like hope. The weaving is not only patience.
